English Linguistics

Linguistics is the study of language in the broadest sense. Its core area – traditionally known as “grammar” – deals with linguistic expressions (words, sentences, texts) themselves and investigates their structure and meaning as well as their concrete acoustic realization. Other areas of linguistics analyze the use of language in human interaction, its synchronic and diachronic variation, its acquisition, and its cognitive basis to name but a few. In our department, we focus on the grammar of English and the makeup of language as a mental capacity in general and explore them from the perspectives of cognitive science, computational linguistics, and cultural studies.
