Professor of English Literature (full professor). Born 1957, education in Hannover and Norwich, GB (University of East Anglia 1977-78), PhD 1984 (Universität Hannover), Habilitation 1992 (venia legendi: "Anglistik unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Allgemeinen Literaturwissenschaft", Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main). 1995 DFG Heisenberg-Stipendium. 1995-1999 Professor of English Literature, Universität Tübingen. Since 1999 Professor of English Literature, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. 2002-2004 Dean Philosophical Faculty II (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin).


Research interests include Early modern English literature and culture, Shakespeare, reception and transformation of antiquity (early modern neoplatonism), poetics and aesthetics, literary theory, and the theory of the imagination.
