About us

HU Hauptgebäude UL6, von Heike Zappe

The Department of English and American Studies is organized in five sections (English Studies, American Studies, Linguistics, English Language Education, and Applied Language Studies). The department offers two Bachelor of Arts degree courses ("Englisch" and "Amerikanistik"), Master of Arts degree courses in English Literatures, in American Studies and in Linguistics as well as two Master of Education degree courses in English. We also cooperate in degree courses in Gender Studies and European Literatures. Our department organizes a variety of events (lectures, conferences, student theatre, and workshops) and is involved in numerous research activities, partly interdisciplinary and partly individual or in groups.

Our department looks back on a long tradition: The first class in the field of "Anglistik" took place in the founding year of the Humboldt-Universität in 1810. In 1876 the first full professor for English Philology was installed. One year later, the Department for Romance and English Languages was founded. In 1895 the English Department became independent, and in 1927 an American Studies sections was added.
